Graham Noble Norwell (1901-1967) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and emigrated to Canada with his family in 1914. They landed in Montreal, but soon moved to Kingston, Ontario. In 1920, Norwell began studies at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto studying under Arthur Lismer, George Reid, J.W. Beatty and Robert Holmes. Subsequently, Norwell travelled to Europe where he continued his studies with Augustus Edwin John. After returning to Canada, Norwell eventually settled in Val David near Sainte-Agathe, Quebec, about 80 km north of Montreal, where he died. Norwell worked mainly in watercolour and oil. His subjects were landscapes, particularly rural Quebec winter scenes. His style is representational with simple shapes and vivid colours. He exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts from 1921–1943, and the Art Association of Montreal between 1922–1943. Today, his works are in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and the Art Gallery of Toronto, among others.
