Description: Oil on canvas. Relined. Likely mid-19th century. Acquired at a country auction in New Brunswick in 2016. Shows some minor surface scuffing.
Erato is one of the Nine Muses of Greek mythology. She is the Muse of lyric poetry, including love and erotic poetry and songs. Erato was the fourth born of the Muses. Her name means “desired”. Erato is often shown wearing a wreath of myrtle (periwinkle). She sometimes holds a lyre, or a small kithara.
