Peter Reynolds Furse (1901-1970) was born in Farnham, Hampshire, Surrey, England. He entered the Royal Navy during WWI at age 17. Furse was a cartographer and graduated Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge in 1922. In 1931, Furse married in England Barbara Elizabeth Ross of Saskatchewan. The couple lived in Nairobi, Kenya, and then Cape Town, South Africa where Furse served in the Royal Navy during WWII. He rose to the rank of Lt. Commander, Royal Navy. After the War, the couple bought Houw Hoek farm in Grabouw, Western Cape (outside Cape Town). Eventually, they retired in Hampton, New Brunswick, where Furse became an artist with his wife, their daughter Kathy, her husband sculptor John Hooper, and other artists in the 'Hampton Group.'
