Steve Clement was born in Victoria, BC, where his father was in RCAF training in Tofino, Vancouver Island. At the age of seven, Steve and his family moved to Montreal. He studied Physics at Sir Georg Williams University (now Concordia), then received a Masters degree in Physics from Carleton University in Ottawa. Following that, Clements traveled to Australia where he would earn a doctorate from the Australian National University. While attending ANU he also took a printmaking course. In 1981, Clement and his family settled in Prince Edward Island, where he operated the Tryon River Studio and Gallery. He died after a short illness in 2021.
